The story of 'The Melancholic Nature Of Relics'
“Working on the emotional potential of shape and space, I am intrigued by the melancholic nature of relics. Through the dazzling beauty of their craft and (un)veiling meaning they become mesmerizing.”
Gazing and considering a relic, a memento, is by means also gazing at an object of vanitas in a broad sense, reminding us of our vulnerability, vanity and contemporality and by doing so reminding us also to live. In my designs I recreate and design objects that have given the veiling meaning of ‘memento’ and ‘memento mori’ a sensatoral physical place in our everyday lives. Inviting/interacting remembrances on the melancholy of (outlasting) time. A tool for contemplation.
